Bruce Lee reinforces Chinese pride with his martial art and he created a new school of martial art, Jie Quan Dao, for the future generations to learn. Another reason why I say Bruce Lee reinforces Chinese pride is that his movies show Chinese nationalism. For example in the movie “Fist of Fury” he is a patriotic Chinese hero who fights against Japanese aggressors. As for World and American history, Bruce Lee can be seen as a cultural bridge who successful stimulated the interests of the non-Chinese to learn more about China.
Other significant Chinese Americans of the 20th century include: (some of them still live now, in the 21th-century, but I am assuming that they still fit your criteria because they made significant contributions in the 20th-century). I am writing their surnames before their first names as in Chinese tradition, and I’m also using the standard hanyu pinyin spelling to spell their names (as opposed to other but not standard spellings) so don’t get confused.
Li Zhengdao: Nobel Prize winner for physics in 1957 for work on the violation of parity law in weak interaction.
Yang Zhengning: Nobel Prize winner for physics in 1957 for work on the violation of parity law in weak interaction.
Wu Jianxiong: hailed as “Marie Curie of China”, her experimental work was crucial for Li Zhengdao and Yang Zhengning’s success but herself didn’t get the Nobel Prize, probably because of the selection committee’s sexism.
Zhang Minjue: a repoductive biologist and the co-inventor of contraceptive birth control pills.
Xu Fengxiong: a computer scientist and the chief architext, designer, and developer for the supercomputer “Deep Blue”, and Deep Blue famously defeated a human world chess champion in the chess match.
Chen Shengshen (more commonly known as Shiing-Shen Chern): a mathematican and one of the world’s leaders in differential geometry in the 20th-century. He is known for Chern-Simons theory, Chern-Weil theory, and Chern class.
Feng Yuanzhen: one of the founding figures of bioengineering and the founder of modern biomechanics.
Ding Zhaozhong: Nobel Prize winner for physics in 1976, for the discovery of the J/ψ particle.
Huang Liushuang (Anna May Wong): she was the first Asian American to become an international star, and with her success the way was paved for Asian Americans of later generations to enter and succeed in the entertainment industry.
I wish I could give you information about people in other fields as well such as literature and journalism but I don’t know these fields very well. I am more familiar with the scientists and I know about Anna May Wong because I watched a short documentary film about her. Hope I had helped.
