Ahh... Paris!
Although Japanese are travelling overseas in increasing numbers (and no, Hawaii doesn't count) many experience an extreme form of culture shock when confronted by behaviour non-Japanese would consider merely idiosyncratic. It turns out that there is actually a scientific term for what happens when visions of kawaii Amelie crash into the reality of kowai waiters and street-sleeping illegals.
The BBC has an interesting article on the subject of Japanese who suffer a psychiatric breakdown while visiting the French capital.

Yes, but is there a giant octopus?
It all begins in 1893, with an intrepid crew of young balloonists whose storybook adventures will bookend, interrupt and sometimes even be read by, scores of at least somewhat more realistic characters over the next 30 years.
You know what this means, don't you? That's right! A new Thomas Pynchon novel!!
